RANSOM – New Exhibition by DENIAL opens March 12 – April 8 in New York at Krause Gallery

Ransom TitleDaniel Joseph Bombardier (AKA: DENIAL) is holding Manhattan’s Krause Gallery hostage with his new exhibition RANSOM. Opening March 12th, the pieces presented build on themes and techniques developed over the Canadian-born artist’s decade long career. Amassing a global following, Denial challenges society to re-examine the ways in which we perceive a variety of socioeconomic and political issues.

RANSOM is a new collection of textually based, laser cut assemblages that bring together a myriad of corporate logos and various imagery to create new messages that combat mass media, consumerism and advertising. The work re-contextualizes these images to create unique artistic statements that drive the viewer to question how they interact with corporations and established power structures that control our everyday lives.

The pieces are very much a play on mainstream advertising. Corporations can be threatening in the way they inundate us with media everywhere we go. They want our money and our minds, whether it’s good for us or not. Corporations hold us hostage in a capitalist and consumerist world; they train us to live in a way that continues to feed into their dominance. Denial’s work merges pop art with a distinct street art technique, rooted in a punk ethos that challenges the powers that be and our own perceptions of them. Denial appropriates the imagery of the very corporations he opposes to make commentary and open discussion about the nature of western consumerist culture.

ABOUT THIS ART
This edition comes ready to hang.

Opening December 18th, Inner State Gallery is proud to present Enjoy Denial a sensory overload of pop art from button-pushing contemporary artist Denial. Amassing a global following, the Canadian-born street artist challenges society to re-examine the ways in which we perceive a variety of socioeconomic and political issues.

Featuring works from Denial’s nearly decade long career, his often satirical approach works to combat mass media, consumerism and advertising by taking familiar imagery and objects and re-contextualizing them into unique artistic statements that drive the viewer to question the worth and difference (if any) between art and advertising.

Building on a long line of pop driven work, Enjoy Denial finds Denial harnessing the negative corporate energies spewed upon society and turns them back against the established power structures that control our everyday lives. With this exhibition, Denial peels back layers of overloaded advertising and logos to shine a not so subtle light on the deceptions society combats daily from corporations.

Fans of the Canadian artist will Enjoy the re-purposed corporate signage; animated and fused with Denial’s signature stencil style. This collection takes the baseline advertising medium of commercial offices and literally ‘flips the script’ to create unique 3-D assemblages with messages that challenge the very same corporate model that originally spawned them. A highly curated night of music includes a live performance from one of Canada’s premiere MCs, Lee Reed of Warsaw Pact among others. Reed’s heavy-handed musical dismemberment of politics and corporate greed pairs perfectly with Denial’s visual critiques.

Your Kid Can’t Do This – Exhibition at Ambush Gallery – Sydney Australia – Curated by E.L.K.

YKCDT_Poster_Artists_06

However derisively you feel about conceptual art, and no matter how skillfully your chubby-cheeked progeny wields a Magic Marker, the fact remains that when it comes to the technical mastery and intricate vision of this line up of world-class stencil artists, Your Kid Can’t Do This.

Returning for the first time since 2010, international stencil art exhibition Your Kid Can’t Do This launches at aMBUSH Gallery, Central Park, Sydney on Friday 26 June from 6-9pm. The group exhibition is curated by Luke Cornish, aka E.L.K, who became the first street-based artist to be selected for inclusion in the prestigious Archibald Prize in 2012, and currently holds the record for creating the highest selling piece of streetart in Australia.

YKCDT is the ultimate showcase of contemporary talent within the field of stencil artistry, featuring over 50 artists from 16 countries, including the Godfather of modern stencil art Blek Le Rat (France), Australian stencil art royalty Haha and Vexta, and Hugo Kaagman (Amsterdam), who is heralded as the ‘original pioneer of stencil art’. YKCDT also platforms the work of every winner of the Australian Stencil Art Prize from 2009-2014, leading stencillers from across Europe and America, and an assortment of emerging artists whose quieter reputations belie their exceptional talent.

E.L.K says, “Modern stencil art exploded on to the scene in Australia in the early 2000s, around the time of the American invasion of Iraq. Hundreds of artists with a message hit the streets and lane ways, using the quickest means of delivering that message: stencil. In the decade that has followed, the boom of street stencils scene has slowed down, but the evolution of the medium continues to progress to a near hyper-realistic aesthetic. The 2015 installment of YKCDT is set to be Australia’s most outstanding display of stencil art yet.”

From 2-5pm on Saturday 27 June, E.L.K will host a stencil workshop in the aMBUSH Gallery Project Space, where he and several of YKCDT’s exhibiting artists will give beginners’ master-classes in the production of stencil art. Class members will gain expert guidance in the production of a multilayered stencil, and will walk away with the artwork they create on the day. Classes are free and open to people over the age of 12, but numbers are extremely limited, so register as soon as possible by emailing your name to elkstencils@hotmail.com.

aMBUSH Gallery is located on Level 3 of Central Park, Chippendale.

“We Will Destroy Eachother” New 6 Colour Screen Print by DENIAL available at www.1xrun.com

“My girlfriend and I recently broke up after 6 years together, it has been really tough to deal with. She is my best friend and probably knows me better than anyone in the world. She has amazing foresight and intuition. We tried a long time to make it work but her premonitions eventually came true.

Those sentiments were the basis for this piece. This print is one of my hybrids, a mix of 2 colors aerosol and 6 color screen printing. I think it is a really fun piece about a sad subject.” – Denial

Denial and Frost formed an instant friendship since their meeting in Canada in 2011 and have been creating engaging street and gallery work ever since. ‘DENIALEX” sees their collaboration push further, with large and small-scale works that reference Pop Art, Graffiti and the corporate world they rebel against.

In 2012 Frost and Denial began collaborating on a project called DENIALEX which encompasses Frosts signature medicinal packages, crying women and humour with Denials faux branding and sign making techniques. To date “This isn’t happening is their second release under the guise of DENIALEX.

In 2013 Canadian artist Denial and Australian born Ben Frost joined forces in a bold exhibition of new work that explores the boundaries of appropriation, in confronting re-imaginings of our current dystopian society, called Company of Thieves. Self-confessed ‘visual thieves’, both artists have had a long history of stealing and subverting the cultural icons that the advertising and consumerist world has thrust upon us, to create new and pertinent interpretations that are as confronting as they are humorous.

Australian artist Ben Frost is known for his kaleidoscopic Pop Art, mash-up paintings that take inspiration from areas as diverse as graffiti, collage, photorealism and sign-writing.

By subverting mainstream iconography from the worlds of advertising, entertainment and politics, he creates a visual framework that is bold, confronting and often controversial.

He has been exhibiting throughout Australia and internationally over the last 12 years, including solo shows in London, New York, Toronto, Singapore and San Francisco, as well as group shows in Beijing, Mongolia, Amsterdam and Berlin.

Daniel Bombardier a.k.a DENIAL is a Canadian stencil and mural artist whose work critiques consumerism and the human condition.  Though based in Windsor Ontario, DENIAL spends much of the year travelling and exhibiting throughout Canada and USA, having done shows in Dubai, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Sydney, Toronto and Vancouver.

In 2000 Daniel adopted the moniker ‘DENIAL’ as a means of poking fun at advertising, politics and media messages that contemporary society is often ‘in denial’ about.  Since then he has maintained an ongoing global street-campaign of over 500, 000 stickers, placards and murals, using the alpha-numeric characters ‘D3N!@L’.  Intended as a conceptual means of marketing absurdism, DENIAL also challenges traditional notions of graffiti and public art through his bold and often satirical visual subversions.

In 2012 Daniel started ‘Free 4 All Walls’ which is the largest public art project of its kind in South West Ontario.  Bringing artists from around the world to beautify and re-invigorate public walls around Windsor, the government funded program has been a huge success in supporting the local community and promoting the value of street-art in contemporary society.  Invited artists who have painted murals include: Nychos (Austria), Bask (USA), Omen (Canada), Ben Frost (Australia), Nosego (USA), Persue (USA), Rime (USA), Above (USA), Elicser (Canada), High 5 (Canada), Nekoes (USA), Labrona (Canada), Gaia (USA), Kwest (Canada), Spud (Canada), Earthcrusher (Canada) , Czr Prz (USA), Chou (Canada), Uber5000 (Canada) and XRAY (Canada). The project intends to continue well into 2014.
